The Te Puru Gymnastics Club offers recreational gymnastics classes for children from 5 years old. Classes run on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30pm onwards. Each class is one hour long and based on age.
All the apparatus you would expect to find in a comprehensive gymnastic class are utilised. This includes the vault, bars, balance beam, floor, and rings. We also use small equipment to assist in developing finer motor skills.
Classes include girls and boys, however where possible genders will be separated into different groups where the focus and skills differ slightly.
From 2018 all children will be taught routines and can enter local gymnastics competitions (optional). We are also offering the New Zealand Gymnastics badge testing.
We have an advanced class (blue) for gymnasts that have mastered skills such as handstands, walkovers and splits. Children will be extended based on their individual ability. Entry to this class is strictly in addition to attendance of their core class for their age.
The focus of our programme is about enjoyment and encouraging a love of gymnastics and physical exercise from an early age. Many fundamental skills, central to many sports, are developed including strength, power, balance, co-ordination, flexibility and overall fitness. Children will also learn about team work and make great friendships that can last a lifetime.
We have a club leotard (girls) and club singlet (boys) which gymnasts are encouraged to wear to classes. This is compulsory if they are participating in competitions and can be purchased from the office.
